Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Clayville, NY.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Clayville that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
