Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Coxsackie, NY.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Coxsackie which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
