Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Davenport Center, NY.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Davenport Center that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
