Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Elba, NY.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Elba which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
