American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need treatment for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to receive rehab in lieu of jail time. So as one can see, there is an absolute need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the very unique requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Ferndale face is access to comprehensive services, particularly those who reside in secluded areas.
