American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. On the Contrary, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab in lieu of jail time. So as one can see, there is an absolute need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the various requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction rehabilitation programs in native languages.
