Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Groton, NY.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Groton which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
