Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Guilderland Center, NY.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Guilderland Center that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
