American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely agreed to a diversion option to receive rehab in lieu of jail time. So as one can see, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the various needs of this client demographic, including addiction rehabilitation services in native languages.
One of the problems that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Hampton Bays face is access to comprehensive and effective rehab programs, especially those who live in rural locations. Facilities offering addiction rehabilitation services in rural regions may not be capable of offering support intended for the needs and demands of this unique demographic including addiction treatment services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can work with elders and stakeholders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to find out which types of treatment services are available to them and through which rehab facilities, and which ones will be most effective for their scenario. There have been many grants sanctioned in recent years to help pay for these types of services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effectively established recovery programs which provide evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive recovery services delivered in their language which are performed by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
