Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Holbrook, NY.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Holbrook which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
