American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need rehabilitation for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely accepted a diversion option to receive rehab instead of jail time. So as one can see, there is a definite need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the very unique requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the problems that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Java Center face is access to comprehensive and effective services, especially those who reside in rural regions. Programs providing addiction rehabilitation services in rural areas may not be set up to provide strategic planning intended for the needs of this special group of people including substance abuse rehabilitation services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can work with stakeholders and elders involved in mental health services for their region or tribe to find out which types of treatment services are an option for them through which rehab facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants approved in recent years to help pay for these types of rehab services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective treatment programs which offer evidence based treatment that also integrates culturally sensitive rehab services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
