Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Knox, NY.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Knox that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
