Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Lake George, NY.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Lake George which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
