Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Laurel, NY.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Laurel that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
