Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Laurens, NY.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Laurens that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
