Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Lisbon, NY.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Lisbon which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
