Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Lockwood, NY.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Lockwood which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
