Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Manlius, NY.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Manlius which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
