One of the outpatient treatment alternatives for clients in Mexico who are struggling with opioid abuse and addiction is called opioid maintenance therapy. Licensed clinics and doctors are certified to administer certain meds to opioid addicted clients, many of which are opioids themselves and are habit forming. In low enough amounts however, the individual does not feel high and also does not have severe cravings and is not experiencing opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first drug tried for this purpose, but there are other options to pick from.
Methadone is an opiate and can be taken at an outpatient clinic licensed to administer the med, which is taken on a daily basis as a pill or liquid. The price of the med is around one hundred and fifty dolloars a month. Buprenorphine is also an opioid based drug, and is a pill often taken every other day. But different from Methadone that can only be administered in highly well-regulated clinics, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is about just under $300 per month for the generic of the medication. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, which is a med which reverses the effects of opioids. Someone taking this version of the drug, AKA Suboxone, would find it more difficult to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken on a daily basis, and costs about $450 a month. Naltrexone is an additional drug taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs aforementioned it is an opiate blocker and is not an opioid. There is an option to take this medication as a monthly shot, which is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents someone from feeling high from opioids, and therefore lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 per month.
