Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Milton, NY.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Milton that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
