There are programs offered in or near Mount Marion that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will instead no longer engage in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
