Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Nesconset, NY.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Nesconset that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
