Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - New Woodstock, NY.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in New Woodstock that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
