Drug and alcohol treatment services are offered in a wide variety of formats, so there is truly something for everyone in New York. Treatment services may be done in both an inpatient and outpatient basis, where outpatient services range from 1 or 2 days of treatment per week to intensive outpatient treatment which is delivered daily. Outpatient treatment services range from individual counseling and group counseling, to more advanced psychotherapies to modify behavior and motivate clients to stay sober.

Inpatient and residential treatment is offered to those who suffer with more substantial histories of drug and alcohol abuse, spanning from 30 - 90 day programs. Some programs have what is called a Therapeutic Community model, where participants may stay as long as a year in some cases. The longer the client stays in in the recovery program and takes advantage of rehabilitation services and a clean atmosphere, the greater their chances of remaining sober and being able stay that way without requiring such a comprehensive system of support. Services within an inpatient or residential drug and alcohol rehab facility are usually more diversified and will involve recovery services for addiction but also other co-occurring mental health disorders. Aftercare services are vital even ensuing long-term rehab, and many programs encourage ongoing engagement in the program for some months until the person has shifted into a drug free way of life.
