American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely agreed to a diversion option to go to rehab instead of jail time. So as one can see, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the various requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction rehabilitation services in native languages.
