The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to promote the behavioral health of the United States. One of its obligations is the supervision of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Drug given are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Peru are programs that are legally allowed to distribute the drugs used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also get auxiliary services in addition to medicine like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab center can receive initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehabilitation facilities accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehab center is approved to operate, it must be re-certified every year or every three years contingent upon the kind of certification it has been granted.
