Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Philadelphia, NY.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Philadelphia which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
