There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Piercefield which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will instead no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to handle the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
