There are programs offered in or near Pomona which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will instead no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and it is encouraged.
