American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require treatment for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab in lieu of jail time. So therefore, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the various requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including substance abuse treatment programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Sherman face is access to effective rehab programs, especially those who reside in rural areas.
