Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Sonyea, NY.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Sonyea which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
