Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Spring Valley, NY.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Spring Valley which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
