Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Springfield Center, NY.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Springfield Center which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
