The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of health efforts to advance the mental health of the United States. One of its duties is the administering of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are programs which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medications given are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Surprise are programs that are officially permitted to give out the medicines used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary services in addition to medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment center can receive basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch.
