Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Wading River, NY.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Wading River which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
