Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Walker Valley, NY.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Walker Valley which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
