Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - West Hempstead, NY.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in West Hempstead that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
