American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need treatment for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. On the Contrary, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to go to treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges. So as you can see, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the various needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment services in native languages.
