Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Wilmington, NY.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Wilmington which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
