Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.
There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.
