Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Beloit, OH.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Beloit which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
