Some clinics and doctors are authorized to dispense certain medications to opioid dependent clients, many that are opioid-based also and are addictive. With low enough doses however, the individual does not experience high feelings and also doesn't have severe cravings and isn't experiencing opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first med tried for this purpose, but there are alternative options currently to choose from.
Methadone is an opiate and can be taken at an outpatient clinic licensed to dispense the drug, that is taken on a daily basis in liquid or pill form. The price of the med is about under $200 per month. Buprenorphine is also an opiate based med, and is a pill often taken every other day. But unlike Methadone that can only be given in highly well-regulated clinics, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and administered in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is about just under $300 a month for the generic version of the medication. There is also a type of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, that is a drug which reverses the effects of opiates. Someone taking this formulation, AKA Suboxone, would find it harder to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken daily, and costs around $450 a month. Naltrexone is an additional medication taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs mentioned here it's an opioid blocker and isn't an opiate. There is an option to take this drug as a monthly injection, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents an individual from getting high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 per month.
