Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Dalton, OH.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Dalton which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
