Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Litchfield, OH.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Litchfield that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
