Regular out-patient rehab is mostly a less costly alternative to more comprehensive outpatient centers or inpatient recovery, and is the lowest intensity of formal alcohol or drug rehabilitation available in Ontario. Some people are attending rehab for the first time and have chosen regular outpatient because that is all they can afford and commitment to time wise and scheduling because of school, work or other obligations. In some cases, regular outpatient is a downgrade from treatment in a more intense outpatient facility like a partial hospitalization or inpatient center.

Regular out-patient recovery options involve some kind of individual and group counseling services delivered once or twice a week. Centers which include a wider spectrum of services may include counseling (CBT) to help with relapse prevention and dual-diagnosis services to help respond to co-occurring addiction and mental health issues. How long a person stays involved in treatment can change from client to client, and a person's improvement can be judged every now and then and an extension of rehab can be suggested based on these evaluations.

In some cases, a regular outpatient treatment program is going to be lacking in intensity for someone who is dealing with a bad substance abuse problem and has never experienced treatment previously or has relapsed after prior outpatient recovery.
