Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Pioneer, OH.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Pioneer which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
