Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Sardinia, OH.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Sardinia that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
