Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Cartwright, OK.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Cartwright which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
