Some centers and doctors are certified to dispense specific medications to opioid dependent clients, many that are opioid-based also and are addiction. With low amounts however, the user does not experience being high but also doesn't experience intense cravings and isn't in opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first med administered for this purpose, but there are a few more options to select from.
Methadone is an opiate and is meant to be taken at an out-patient medical center licensed to administer the med, that is taken on a daily basis in liquid or pill form. The price of the drug is about $150 monthly. Buprenorphine is also an opioid based drug, and is in pill form often taken every other day. But different from Methadone which can only be administered in well-regulated medical centers, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and administered in doctor's offices. The cost monthly of buprenorphine is approximately $300 per month for the generic version of the medication. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, which is a drug which reverses the effects of opiates. A person consuming this formulation, also known as Suboxone, would find it more difficult to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken every day, and costs about $450 a month. Naltrexone is an additional drug used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other medications mentioned here it's an opioid blocker and isn't an opiate. There is an option to take this drug as a monthly shot, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents an individual from experience being high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 a month.
