Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Hollis, OK.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Hollis which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
